Yarr. Boo.

So this Saturday was Pirate Day.

(Yes, this isn’t massively topical any more, I sort of got distracted by a mix of real life stuff and WoW stuff).

As is pretty much mandatory on the internet, I’m kind of into the whole pirate thing. Which is to say, I’m into the romantic ideal of piracy and think that people who say “ah, but real pirates were all murderers and rapists” are morons who completely miss the point (I wonder if these people say the same thing about, y’know, medieval knights. Actually I suspect that they do).

So anyway on Pirate Day I rocked down to Silvermoon to talk to a Commoner (has anybody else noticed how weird it is that the commoners are only around when there’s a festival on – what do they do the rest of the time? Perhaps there’s an agency: “Need to inform people about your festival, just call Pan-Azeroth Commonerium!”) and I got dressed as a pirate. Yay!

So I ran around for a bit dressed up as a pirate, and then I ran to Sunfury spire to teleport to the Undercity, so that I could get on the Zeppelin so I could go to Grom’gol, so that I could get on a Flight Path, so I could go to Booty Bay, so I could talk to Captain Whatsername.

So I did, and I drank a bit of grog, which extended the one-hour costume buff that I had on to a twelve hour costume buff.

Then I wandered around talking to pirates, and had a couple of people say “ahoy”.

Then I realised that there really wasn’t much going on there and hearthed back to Icecrown.

I know that International Talk Like a Pirate Day isn’t exactly a major festival. I know it’s only a one day thing but, I dunno, I expected something other than “look! pirates!” Maybe a quest. It wouldn’t even have to have been a particularly interesting quest. Just something I could do and get, I dunno, a souvenir mug saying “I Heart Pirates” or “Yarr” or maybe “I Don’t Know If You Realise This, But In Reality Actual Pirates Were Rather Nasty People”. Maybe there could have been a special boss in Deadmines, like the Brewfest boss in Blackrock.

I know that there’s a lot of pirate stuff already in the game, and I’m sure if I wanted to I could grind myself a complete set of Pirate Paraphernalia but would it have really been such a crime to give us something more tangible than a buff from an NPC? I mean heck, even Kingdom of Loathing has stuff implemented for ITLAPDay (a usable item that makes you randomly add “yarr” and “avast” to in-game chat, in case anybody was wondering).

I know it’s a tiny, tiny bit of the in-game calendar, and it butts right up against Brewfest but y’know. Pirates. Yarr.

I just woulda liked a hat or something is all.
